In the first film Camille Billops made with theater historian James Hatch, her niece Suzanne reveals the brutal whippings she endured at the hands of her father, in which her mother was eerily complicit. Miraculously, Suzanne forgives her mother and her father by the end of the film, proving what was perhaps Billiops’ theory and motive — that film can be a medium for healing. A sculptor, ceramicist, photographer, and painter, Camille Billops has only recently earned her due as a filmmaker. Suzanne Suzanne was named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2016.
